May is Older American Month

The 2014 Older Americans Month theme is Safe Today. Healthy Tomorrow.

History of Older Americans Month

may14-1When Older Americans Month was established in 1963, only 17 million living Americans had reached their 65th birthdays..

Interest in older Americans and their concerns was growing, however. In April of 1963, President John F. Kennedy’s meeting with the National Council of Senior Citizens served as a prelude to designating May as “Senior Citizens Month.”

Thanks to President Jimmy Carter’s 1980 designation, what was once called Senior Citizens Month, is now called “Older Americans Month,“ and has become a tradition.

Older Americans Month is celebrated across the country through ceremonies, events, fairs, and other such activities.

Something to Think about: The Age Wave

may-14-2The largest generation in American history, the Baby Boomers, is aging. The leading edge of the boomer generation (those born between 1946 and 1964) is turning 66 in 2012. And better health care means more older adults are living longer than ever before. These two demographic facts are combining to create an unprecedented Age Wave in America.

Nationally:
The number of persons age 65 or older stands at 40.37 million in 2010. Projected to increase to 55 million by 2020, 70 million by 2030 and 88.5 million by 2050.

The number of people age 85 or older stands at 5.5 million in 2010 (compared to 3 million in 1990). Projected to increase to almost 7 million by 2020 and 19 million by 2050.

The fastest growing population segment is age 75 and older.

2 Corinthians 4:16“So we do not lose heart. Even though our outer nature is wasting away, our inner nature is being renewed day by day.”In old age when bodies are feeble, spirits remain strong.

Exodus 7:7“Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three, when they spoke to Pharaoh”.We continue as disciples throughout our lives.
